Ihram Restrictions: What Is Allowed and Not Allowed

The moment you make your niyyah and say the talbiyah at the Miqat, a short list of everyday things becomes off-limits until your Umrah is complete. These ihram restrictions are not hard to keep, but first-timers often worry about the small things: Can I use soap? Can I shower? Is the hand wash in the hotel washroom a problem? This guide explains what is not allowed in ihram for men and women, what stays allowed, and how to pack toiletries that keep you clean without breaking a rule.

Deen Diary sells a fragrance-free Tahara Kit, so please read the product parts with that in mind. The rulings below are paraphrased from the sources linked in each section. Where the madhabs differ, we say so. For anything about your own situation, ask a scholar you trust.

When Do Ihram Restrictions Begin and End?

Wearing the white sheets does not by itself put you in ihram. The Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah's Ihram Awareness Guide explains that ihram begins when you form the intention for Umrah or Hajj and start the talbiyah. Before that point, the same guide says it is Sunnah to take a ghusl and apply fragrance. IslamQA adds in its answer on putting on perfume before ihram that the perfume goes on the head and body, not on the ihram garments.

For Umrah, the restrictions stay in place until you finish Tawaf and Sa'i and then shave or trim your hair. Jamia Uloom-ul-Islamia Banuri Town warns that changing into normal clothes before the halq or qasr carries a penalty, so do not rush back to the hotel and change first. The full order of the rites is in our Complete Umrah Guide: Step by Step.

What Is Not Allowed in Ihram for Everyone

Some ihram restrictions apply to both men and women. The Ministry's guide and IslamQA's answer on things to avoid in ihram list the same core points:

  • Perfume. No perfume on the body, clothes or bedding once you are in ihram. This includes attar, scented oils and body sprays.
  • Hair and nails. Do not shave, cut or pluck hair from the head or body, and do not clip your nails.
  • Intimacy. Intercourse is forbidden, and so is touching your spouse with desire.
  • Marriage. You may not enter into a nikah, for yourself or on behalf of someone else.
  • Hunting. Killing or hunting land game is not allowed.

The Ministry also reminds pilgrims of the verse in Surah al-Baqarah about avoiding sin and arguments during Hajj. Long queues and crowded buses test everyone's patience, so this one is worth remembering as much as the others.

Ihram Restrictions for Men

Men wear two unstitched sheets, the izar around the waist and the rida over the shoulders. The extra rules for men are mostly about clothing:

  • No tailored clothing. Shirts, trousers, vests, underwear and similar garments are not allowed. IslamQA explains that "sewn" here means clothes cut to the shape of the body, not any cloth with a stitch in it. That is why the stitch-free lower piece of a Tubular Ihram has been ruled permissible, as we covered in Is Tubular Ihram Allowed? and compared in Tubular Ihram vs Traditional Ihram.
  • No head covering. Caps, turbans and the top of a shawl pulled over the head are out. Shade is different: IslamQA says an umbrella, tent or bus roof that does not rest on the head is fine.
  • No socks or closed shoes. Banuri Town says men may not wear socks in ihram, while women may. In the Hanafi view, footwear must also leave the raised bone on the top of the foot uncovered. Banuri Town says chappals that hide that bone are not allowed, so check your sandals before you travel. Our Ihram Sandals are open across the top for this reason.

Covering the face is one point where the schools differ for men. In the Hanafi school a man should not cover his face in ihram, whereas IslamQA's answer on face masks in ihram says it is not prohibited for men, following the view it considers more correct. If you need a mask for health reasons, ask your scholar which view to follow and whether anything is due.

Ihram Restrictions for Women

Women do not have a special ihram dress. The Ministry's guide says a woman may enter ihram in any clothing that is loose, covers properly, does not restrict movement and is not made for adornment. Banuri Town says there is no condition of colour or a particular fabric for women's ihram clothes. The general rules on perfume, hair, nails and intimacy apply to women in full.

Face covering and niqab

A woman in ihram should not wear a niqab or burqa, and IslamQA counts a fitted face mask in the same category. Purdah still matters, though. When non-mahram men are near, she lowers a cloth from her head in front of her face. Here the schools differ slightly in practice:

  • IslamQA, in answer 11356, says it does not matter if that lowered cloth touches the face.
  • Banuri Town, following the Hanafi view, says the cloth should not touch the face, and recommends a cap with a visor and veil attached of the kind Banuri Town notes are sold in markets and at Haji camps.

Gloves and socks

The Ministry's guide lists gloves among the restrictions for women. In the Hanafi view taught by Banuri Town, women may wear both socks and gloves in ihram. Follow the school your family follows, and ask your group's scholar if you are not sure.

What Is Allowed in Ihram

A lot of worry comes from rules that do not exist. The Ministry's guide lists bathing, wearing sandals, bandaging wounds and a woman covering her face in front of non-mahram men as things that are not among the prohibitions. Other permitted things include:

  • Showering and changing sheets. IslamQA notes that the Prophet ﷺ bathed while in ihram, and you may change into a fresh, clean set.
  • A belt or money bag. The Ministry allows a belt or clips to secure the izar. Banuri Town says tying a bag around the waist for your passport and phone is permissible. An Ihram Belt Bag keeps documents close during Tawaf.
  • Glasses, a watch and a ring. A Hanafi answer from SeekersGuidance explains that watches, glasses and belts are not counted as clothing.
  • Unscented creams. Banuri Town says a cream or petroleum jelly with no fragrance may be applied anywhere on the body. That helps with cracked heels and the chafing the Ministry's guide warns about.

Perfume, Soap and Shampoo: Choosing Unscented Products

All scholars agree that perfume is forbidden in ihram. The question pilgrims ask most is whether scented soap, shampoo and hand wash count as perfume. Here the answers differ:

  • Hanafi view. Banuri Town says scented soap and shampoo should be avoided in ihram. In its answer on shampoo in ihram, the penalty depends on how strong the scent is and how many times it was used, ranging from sadaqah to a dam. A shampoo with no fragrance at all brings no penalty.
  • Other views. IslamQA quotes Shaykh Ibn Uthaymin as saying the pleasant smell of shampoo is not perfume in itself, while anything that really is perfume stays forbidden.

Choosing products with no fragrance at all keeps you clear under every view, so it is the simplest choice. One caution from the same Banuri Town answer: removing body dirt for its own sake is disliked in ihram, so use even unscented products gently and when you need them, such as for wudu, after the toilet or a ghusl.

Easy-to-miss scents

  • Washroom hand wash. Banuri Town was asked about a pilgrim who used the hand wash in a wudu area before his halq. In the Hanafi view sadaqah was due even though he forgot. Carry your own.
  • Toothpaste and mouthwash. Banuri Town says plain toothpaste with no added fragrance is fine, flavoured toothpaste needs care, and mouthwash should not be used in ihram. A miswak avoids the question.
  • Wet wipes, tissues, lotions and sunscreen. Many are scented. Read the label, and treat words like fragrance, perfume or parfum in the ingredients as a sign to leave it at home.
  • At the barber. You are still in ihram until the halq is done, which is why Banuri Town's shampoo answer deals with scented shampoo used for the halq itself. Ask the barber to use plain water or your own unscented shampoo.

Your ihram toiletries checklist

  • Fragrance-free shampoo
  • Fragrance-free body wash
  • Fragrance-free hand and face wash in a small bottle for your bag
  • Unscented cream or petroleum jelly for heels and chafing
  • Miswak or plain toothpaste
  • Unscented wet wipes

The Deen Diary Tahara Kit covers the first three. Its bottles are labelled fragrance free and halal: a 120 ml shampoo, a 120 ml body wash and a 50 ml hand and face wash that fits in a belt bag. For the rest of your luggage, see our Umrah packing list.

If You Break an Ihram Restriction by Mistake

First, stop. Wash off the perfume, take off the cap or remove whatever caused the problem as soon as you remember. Then find out what is due, because the schools differ here too:

  • IslamQA's view, explained in its answer on types of fidyah, is that nothing is due from someone who acted out of forgetfulness, ignorance or force. A deliberate violation with a genuine excuse, such as covering the head because of illness, carries a fidyah but no sin.
  • In the Hanafi view, a penalty can still be due even when the act was a mistake. Banuri Town says this about washing hands with scented soap by forgetting. Depending on the act and how long it lasted, the penalty may be sadaqah or a dam slaughtered within the Haram.

Do not guess the penalty or pay out of panic. Ask the scholar travelling with your group, or a darul ifta you trust, and tell them exactly what happened.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use unscented soap in ihram?

Yes. Soap with no fragrance does not break ihram in any of the views cited above, and Banuri Town says nothing is due for using it. Hanafi scholars add that scrubbing off body dirt for its own sake is disliked, so use it when you need it.

Can you shower while in ihram?

Yes. The Ministry's guide lists bathing among the things that are not prohibited, and IslamQA notes the Prophet ﷺ bathed in ihram. Just use unscented products.

Ahram ki pabandiyan for ladies: what is different?

Women wear their normal modest clothes, may wear socks and closed shoes, and may cover their heads. They should not wear a niqab, burqa or fitted face mask. Gloves are a point of difference between the schools. Perfume, hair, nails and intimacy rules are the same as for men.

Can I wear a face mask in ihram?

Women should not, as both IslamQA and Banuri Town treat a mask like a niqab. For men, the Hanafi school counts it as covering the face, while IslamQA says it is allowed. If you need one for health reasons, ask your scholar first.

Can I use toothpaste in ihram?

Plain toothpaste with no added fragrance is fine according to Banuri Town. Strongly flavoured toothpaste and mouthwash are best avoided. A miswak is the simplest choice.

Can I wear a belt bag in ihram?

Yes. The Ministry's guide allows a belt to secure the izar and keep belongings safe, and Banuri Town says a bag tied at the waist is permissible.

Keeping Ihram Restrictions with Ease

Most ihram restrictions come down to a few habits: no perfume, no cutting hair or nails, men in unstitched sheets with the head uncovered, and women with the face uncovered except for screening from non-mahram men. Pack fragrance-free toiletries, carry your own hand wash, and ask a scholar before you act on anything you are unsure about.

If you are still packing, the Tahara Kit covers the unscented basics, and pocket Umrah Guide Cards include pages on what is prohibited and what is permitted in ihram. You can find everything else in our Hajj & Umrah collection. May Allah make your Umrah easy and accept it from you. Ameen.
