Is Tubular Ihram Allowed? What Scholars Say
Many Pakistani men preparing for Umrah ask the same question: is tubular ihram allowed? The lower sheet comes as a ready tube, so it stays in place without constant wrapping, which is why first-time pilgrims look for it. The religious answer is not a marketing slogan. It sits in published fatwas about what counts as mukheet (stitched or body-shaped clothing) for a man in ihram. This article summarises what three named Pakistani darul ifta have written about a stitch-free tubular ihram, and ends with practical points for travel from Pakistan.
This is not a personal fatwa from Deen Diary. Scholars differ in wording and emphasis. For your own case, ask a scholar you trust or your group's religious guide.
What Is a Tubular Ihram?
A traditional male ihram is two unstitched sheets: an izar (lower) and a rida (upper). You wrap the lower sheet around the waist and secure it carefully so the satr stays covered during Tawaf, Sa'i and sleep.
A Tubular Ihram keeps the same two-piece idea, but the lower piece is woven or formed as a continuous tube rather than an open rectangle. There is no pant-style stitching for legs, no waistband like trousers, and no shirt shape. The upper piece remains an open sheet. Pilgrims choose it mainly because it is harder for the lower sheet to slip open while walking or sleeping.

Why the Question Exists
In ihram, men must avoid clothing that is made to the shape of the body or a body part in the usual way of wearing it. Classical texts discuss shirts, trousers, turbans, socks and similar items. Modern products such as a tube-style izar were not named in those texts, so contemporary darul ifta are asked whether a tube counts as the prohibited mukheet clothing or as a simple sheet that happens to be joined at the sides.
IslamQA's Hanafi discussion of wearing underwear in ihram explains the broader criterion many Hanafi works use: anything made to wrap and stay on the body by sewing, joining or similar means in the normal way of dress. A tube izar sits in a grey zone between an open sheet and fitted trousers, which is why the question is put to darul ifta and why their answers explain the reasoning rather than giving a one-word yes or no.
What Named Darul Ifta Have Written
The Deen Diary Tubular Ihram is made under the name Ahram Al-Bathaa (احرام البطحاء). Three darul ifta answered written questions about this specific product, and scans of their written fatwas are reproduced below and on the product page. These rulings are not published as web pages, so these scans are the place to read the original Urdu.
-
Dar ul Ifta, Jamia Ashrafia, Lahore (dated 28 October 2025): if an ihram cloth is shaped like a lungi but has no stitching anywhere, using it is permissible without dislike (bila karahat). Because the Ahram Al-Bathaa ihram uses no stitching, it may be worn as ihram without dislike.

-
Dar ul Ifta, Jamia Naeemia, Lahore (dated 12 November 2025): the Ahram Al-Bathaa lower sheet, woven round as one piece without stitching, is permissible to use as the tehband in ihram. The fatwa adds that the open, unstitched sheet is better (afzal) for those who can manage it, to gain the full reward of the Sunnah dress, and that it is permissible for others to use the round tehband.

-
Dar ul Ifta, Jamia Darul Uloom Karachi (dated 18 March 2025): a round cloth in the shape of a lungi with no stitching anywhere is permissible in ihram, and no dam is due for wearing it. The fatwa explains that a sewn lungi is mildly disliked (makruh tanzihi) because the stitching resembles sewn clothing, but since this cloth has no stitching, even that mild dislike does not apply.

How These Answers Fit Together
Read side by side, the three fatwas share a clear pattern:
- The deciding factor is stitching. Each answer treats a lower sheet woven round as one piece, with no stitching anywhere, differently from sewn or body-fitted clothing.
- On that basis, all three call the tube-style lower sheet permissible in ihram, and Jamia Ashrafia and Jamia Darul Uloom Karachi say it is without dislike.
- Jamia Darul Uloom Karachi adds that no dam is due for wearing it.
- The open, unstitched sheet remains the Sunnah ideal. Jamia Naeemia says it is afzal for those who can manage it, while allowing the round tehband for others.
These are Hanafi Pakistani darul ifta answering a question about one specific product. They are not a single binding word for every Muslim in every madhhab. If your teacher follows another school, or if your situation is unusual, ask them with the product in hand.
How to Wear a Tubular Ihram Before the Miqat
The fatwas settle the ruling question for this product. The practical question is simpler: how do you put it on so it stays put and keeps you covered? One practice run at home is usually enough to get comfortable with it.
- Take your bath (ghusl) or wudu and trim nails and hair before intention, as you would with any ihram.
- Step into the tube and pull it up to the waist so the fabric sits evenly all the way round. No pins or knots are needed.
- If there is spare width at the waist, fold it neatly at the front so it lies flat and stays in place.
- Check the length. The lower sheet should cover you well below the knees whether you stand, sit or bend in sajdah.
- Drape the upper sheet over both shoulders. Leave the right shoulder uncovered only when the Sunnah calls for it during Tawaf, as explained in our step-by-step Umrah guide.
- Make your intention and begin the Talbiyah at or before the Miqat, not after it.
If you wear a money belt or belt bag over the lower sheet, fasten it once the lower sheet is settled at the waist. Pilgrims flying from Pakistan often change at home or at the airport, because the Miqat is crossed in the air on the way to Jeddah, so plan where you will put on ihram before the trip starts.
Practical Notes for Pilgrims from Pakistan
Ask before you buy in bulk. If you are travelling with a group, show your scholar the product or a photo and ask whether they are comfortable with it for your group.
Lower piece only. The fatwas above discuss the tube as the lower tehband. Keep a normal open sheet for the upper body, as the product is designed.
Practice at home. Whether you choose open sheets or a tube, put the ihram on at home, walk, sit and lie down. Fix any slipping problem before the Miqat, not in the airport washroom.
Scent and other ihram rules still apply. Fabric design does not change the rest of ihram: no perfume on body or clothes after intention, no cutting hair or nails, and the other well-known restrictions summarised by IslamQA. Many pilgrims pack an unscented Tahara Kit for that reason.
Learn the steps, not only the cloth. Ihram is one part of Umrah. Keep a clear method with you, such as our Complete Umrah Guide: Step by Step or pocket Umrah Guide Cards.
Pack the rest of the kit. Sandals that leave the top of the foot uncovered, a belt bag for documents, and a packing plan help more than any single garment. See What to Pack for Umrah and the Hajj & Umrah collection.
Who Finds a Tubular Ihram Most Useful?
An open sheet is the Sunnah ideal and many pilgrims wear one with no trouble at all. Those who prefer the tube style usually have practical reasons:
- First-time pilgrims who have never tied an izar and worry about it opening in a crowded Mataf.
- Elderly fathers and grandfathers who find repeated retying tiring, especially on long walks between Safa and Marwah.
- Men travelling by bus between Madinah and Makkah who want to sleep in ihram without the lower sheet slipping.
- Boys on their first Umrah, for whom a smaller tube is easier to manage than adult-size sheets.
If none of these apply and you are comfortable with open sheets, there is no need to switch. If one of them sounds like you or someone in your family, read the three fatwas above with your scholar and decide together.
Tubular Ihram Fatwa: Questions to Ask Your Scholar
A written fatwa answers the exact question it was asked. If you want to be fully at ease, take the product or a clear photo to a scholar you trust and ask:
- Does the absence of stitching in this tube make it acceptable for me as the lower sheet in ihram?
- Is there any dislike (karahat) in using it, or is it simply a matter of the open sheet being better?
- Does my madhhab treat a woven tube the same way as these Hanafi darul ifta do?
- If I need to sew or repair the sheet during the trip, does that change the ruling? (A sewn repair may change the answer, so ask.)
Having these questions ready saves time with a busy imam or group guide, and the answer you get will fit your own situation rather than a general blog summary.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is tubular ihram allowed in Islam?
Fatwas from Jamia Ashrafia Lahore, Jamia Naeemia Lahore and Jamia Darul Uloom Karachi, issued for the Deen Diary Tubular Ihram, call it permissible because the lower sheet has no stitching. Jamia Naeemia notes that the open sheet is still better for those who can manage it. For your own case, ask a scholar you trust.
Do I have to give dam if I wear a tubular ihram?
Jamia Darul Uloom Karachi's fatwa for this product says no dam is due for wearing it, because it has no stitching. Confirm with your scholar; do not treat a blog summary as a substitute for one.
Is a tubular ihram the same as wearing trousers in ihram?
No. The fatwas above turn on the absence of stitching: a lower sheet woven round as one piece is not treated like sewn or limb-fitted clothing such as trousers. Your scholar can apply the same reasoning to the exact product you hold.
Is tubular ihram allowed for Hajj as well as Umrah?
The three fatwas speak about wearing the cloth in the state of ihram in general, not only for Umrah. The same ihram rules apply in both, so the reasoning about stitching is the same. Ask your scholar if you want confirmation for Hajj specifically.
Can I use the tube sheet as my upper ihram?
The fatwas discuss the tube only as the lower tehband. Keep a normal open sheet for the upper body.
Where can I read the Urdu fatwas myself?
Scans of all three written fatwas are included in this post, in the section What Named Darul Ifta Have Written above, and also on the Tubular Ihram product page. Save them on your phone before travel if you want them without roaming data.
