Tubular Ihram vs Traditional Ihram: Which Is Better for You?
Before an Umrah trip, most Pakistani families end up asking the same thing in the ihram shop: should we buy the usual two white sheets, or a tubular ihram where the lower piece comes as a ready tube? Both are made for men, both keep an open sheet on the shoulders, and both are worn for Umrah and Hajj. The difference is in the lower piece, and in how much practice it takes to keep it in place. This comparison explains what each one is, what scholars have said, and the practical points that usually settle the choice.
Deen Diary sells a Tubular Ihram, so please read this with that in mind. We have tried to be fair to both options. For any ruling about your own ihram, ask a scholar you trust.
What Is a Traditional Ihram?
For men, ihram clothing is two pieces: the izar, wrapped around the lower body, and the rida, worn over the upper body. The Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah describes it this way in its Ihram Awareness Guide and recommends white. IslamQA's answer on whether there is a specific garment for ihram adds that men should avoid anything form-fitting, such as a thobe or trousers, and a second answer explains that the two sheets should ideally be clean and white, though they need not be new.
This is the dress the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions wore in ihram, which is why scholars treat open, unstitched sheets as the Sunnah default. Traditional ihram suits every man, is easy to find in any market, and needs nothing more than a little practice to wrap well.
What to check when buying open sheets
Many sheets in the market have hemmed edges to stop fraying. Jamia Uloom-ul-Islamia Banuri Town says it is better for ihram sheets to have no stitching at all, though hemming the edges because threads are coming loose does not bring any penalty. Length matters too. In a separate answer on the length of ihram sheets, the same darul ifta says the upper sheet should pass easily from under the right shoulder over the left, so the body stays covered during idtiba in Tawaf, and the lower sheet should cover you well from the navel down to just above the ankles.
What Is a Tubular Ihram?
A tubular ihram keeps the open upper sheet and changes only the lower piece. Instead of a rectangle that you wrap and tuck, the lower piece is woven round as one continuous tube. There is no stitching for legs, no waistband and no shirt shape. You step into it, pull it up to the waist, and fold any spare width flat at the front.
The Deen Diary Tubular Ihram comes in two sizes. Its product page lists 100% combed cotton and these measurements:
- Standard: upper chaddar 45 x 90 inches; bottom tube 36 x 50 inches, 72 inches round at the waist.
- Extra Large: upper chaddar 45 x 90 inches; bottom tube 38 x 60 inches, 76 inches round at the waist.

Is a Tubular Ihram Allowed?
This is usually the first question, and we answered it in detail in Is Tubular Ihram Allowed? What Scholars Say. In short, three Pakistani darul ifta wrote fatwas about this specific product, which is made under the name Ahram Al-Bathaa:
- Jamia Ashrafia, Lahore: permissible without dislike, because the lower piece has no stitching.
- Jamia Darul Uloom, Karachi: permissible, with no dam due for wearing it.
- Jamia Naeemia, Lahore: permissible as the lower tehband. The fatwa adds that the open, unstitched sheet of the Sunnah is afzal (better) for those who can manage it.
So, according to these fatwas, both choices are valid, and the open sheet keeps its place as the Sunnah ideal. If your teacher follows another school or sees the question differently, follow their guidance.
Tubular Ihram vs Normal Ihram: Side by Side
Here is how the two compare on the points pilgrims ask about most.
| Point | Traditional ihram | Tubular ihram |
|---|---|---|
| Lower piece | Open rectangular sheet, wrapped around the waist | Tube woven round as one piece, with no stitching |
| Upper piece | Open sheet over the shoulders | The same open sheet |
| Sunnah standing | The dress of the Prophet ﷺ; the Sunnah default | Permissible per the fatwas above; the open sheet is still called better |
| Putting it on | Wrap, tuck and check; takes some practice | Step in, pull up, fold spare width at the front |
| Staying in place | Depends on how well it is wrapped; can loosen while walking or sleeping | No open edge at the side, so it is less likely to come apart |
| Scholarly questions | None about the shape | Worth confirming with your own scholar if you follow another school |

When Traditional Ihram Is the Better Choice
- You want the Sunnah dress as closely as possible. Jamia Naeemia's fatwa says plainly that the open sheet is better for anyone who can manage it.
- You have worn ihram before and your lower sheet stays put without trouble.
- Your group guide prefers open sheets. Going along with the person leading your group keeps things simple on the trip.
- You are very tall or broad and want to choose sheet lengths that suit you, which is easy with open sheets.
The one weak point of a traditional ihram is that the lower sheet can work loose, especially on the first day. Wear it at home for a few hours, walk, sit and go into sajdah, and most men are comfortable with it before they fly.
When a Tubular Ihram Helps
- First-time pilgrims who have never tied an izar and worry about it opening in a crowded Mataf.
- Elderly fathers and grandfathers who find repeated retying tiring on long walks between Safa and Marwah.
- Men sleeping or travelling in ihram, for example on the road from Madinah to Makkah, who do not want to keep checking the lower sheet.
- Anyone whose sheet has slipped before and who would rather not think about it during Tawaf.
It is just as useful to be clear about what a tube does not change. Every other ihram rule still applies. The upper sheet is the same open chaddar, so you will still adjust it for Tawaf. And it does not replace learning the steps of Umrah itself.
Which Ihram Is Best for Umrah? Five Questions to Ask
When people ask "ihram kaun sa behtar hai?", the honest answer is that it depends on the person wearing it. These questions usually make the choice clear:
- Have I worn an izar before, and did it stay up without constant fixing?
- Will I be sleeping or travelling for long hours in ihram?
- Is anyone in our group elderly, or a young boy, who will struggle with wrapping?
- What does my scholar or group guide advise?
- Do I want the Sunnah ideal even if it takes more practice?
If most of your answers point towards ease and security, a tubular ihram is a sensible choice. If you are comfortable with open sheets and want the Sunnah dress, stay with them. Neither choice makes your Umrah less valid according to the fatwas summarised above.
Wearing Either Type Before the Miqat
Flights from Pakistan cross the Miqat in the air, and the Ministry's Ihram Awareness Guide notes that airlines heading to Jeddah usually announce when the aircraft is level with a Miqat. Most men therefore change into ihram at home or at the airport, so it pays to be comfortable in it beforehand.
- Do a full practice run. Walk, sit on the floor, go into sajdah and lie down. Fix any problem at home, not in an airport washroom.
- Belts and pins. The Ministry's guide says a belt or clips may be used to secure the izar and keep belongings safe. Hanafi scholars discuss knotting and tying the sheet in more detail, so if you plan to use pins or knots, ask your scholar first. Many pilgrims keep money and documents in an Ihram Belt Bag.
- Watch for chafing. The same guide says chafing in body folds is common among pilgrims and suggests protective ointment before walking, good ventilation and personal hygiene. Choose unscented products, since perfume is not allowed after intention. An unscented Tahara Kit covers the basics.
- Sort your footwear. Sandals that leave the top of the foot uncovered, such as our Ihram Sandals, complete the outfit for either type.

A Smaller Tube for Boys
Boys travelling with their parents often find adult sheets too big to manage. The Kids Tubular Ihram follows the same design in two sizes. The product page lists 85% combed cotton and 15% polyamide, with these measurements:
- Small: upper chaddar 26 x 68 inches; bottom tube 22 x 32 inches, 44 inches round.
- Medium: upper chaddar 36 x 74 inches; bottom tube 35 x 42 inches, 70 inches round.
Measure your son from the navel to just above the ankle before you choose, and let him wear it around the house a few times so it feels normal on the day.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a tubular ihram and a normal ihram?
Only the lower piece differs. A normal ihram uses an open sheet that you wrap around the waist, while a tubular ihram uses a lower piece woven round as one tube with no stitching. The upper sheet is an open chaddar in both.
Is a tubular ihram better than a traditional ihram?
Not in religious terms. The open, unstitched sheet is the Sunnah ideal, and Jamia Naeemia's fatwa calls it better for those who can manage it. A tube is a practical choice for people who struggle to keep the lower sheet in place.
Ihram kaun sa behtar hai for a first Umrah?
If you have never tied an izar and are worried about it slipping, many first-timers find a tubular ihram easier. If you can practise with open sheets and are comfortable in them, they remain the Sunnah way. Ask your group guide if you are unsure.
Can I wear a tubular ihram for Hajj as well?
The three fatwas about this product speak about wearing it in the state of ihram generally, not only for Umrah. Ask your scholar if you want confirmation for Hajj specifically.
Which tubular ihram size should I buy?
Compare the measurements above with your own waist and height. The lower piece should cover you well from the navel down to just above the ankles. The Extra Large tube is bigger on both measurements than the Standard one.
Can I wear a belt bag with a tubular ihram?
Many pilgrims do, and the Saudi Ministry's guide allows a belt to secure the izar and keep belongings safe. Put the tube on first, settle it at the waist, then fasten the belt bag over it. If you plan to use pins or knots as well, check with your scholar.
Tubular Ihram or Traditional: Making Your Choice
Traditional open sheets are the Sunnah dress and suit everyone who can keep them in place. A tubular ihram changes only the lower piece, is called permissible in the fatwas written for this product, and mainly helps first-timers, older men and anyone whose sheet keeps slipping. Choose the one you will wear with the least worry, practise at home, and ask your scholar if anything is unclear.
If you decide on a tube, you can see the sizes and fatwas on the Tubular Ihram page, or browse the full Hajj & Umrah collection to complete your kit. May Allah accept your Umrah. Ameen.
